Prunes

Whether you are a newbie or an old pro, everybody knows: Prunes is a Kampala classic.

THE Saturday market

Allow me to describe a typical Saturday morning at Prunes: at around 8 a.m. the Farmers Market is open for business. Fresh and often organic fruit, vegetables, herbs, eggs, chicken, cheese, humus, it’s all on display. Shortly after, the expats arrive. Big colorful shoppers and serious grocery lists roam the market. Some just quickly stop by Prunes for the market and don’t feel like bumping into people they know, which is of course bound to happen. Others linger around after shopping and treat themselves to a Prunes breakfast or brunch on the patio or in the garden while the little people are having fun on the swings, the trampoline or in the sand pit. In short, a very popular hang out on a Saturday so if you’re late, forget it!

Chick chick hurray!

Not only the market is responsible for the crowd though. Prunes has a really nice look and feel and the food’s pleasant. I like Salad Thursday the most. You can customize your own salad with a lot of different goodies for 25K. So on Thursdays the menu’s a no brainer, but on other days it’s really difficult to choose from the elaborate dishes from all over the world. Do I feel like having a Libanese humus platter (35K), the chick chick hurray (28K) or a good old hamburger (7 different ones ranging from 26K to 34K)?

Terrace and garden

The charming house turned cafe-restaurant has a half moon shaped terrace with wooden tables and funny light bulbs in white glass jars hanging from the ceiling. If the terrace’s full, you can also sit in the garden although not every table has a sun screen. And even if it does, it can get crazy hot.

Once inside, it’s impossible to ignore the big wooden bar in the middle nor the creamy (cup)cakes behind it that are testing your resilience. Even though the place is small, there’s a library corner where you can purchase a second hand book. In the back the small shop Ricci Everyday is worth taking a browse.
