Olives

In Naguru nice restaurants and bars are quite scarce. But a change is gonna come! Not in the last place with the opening of Olives, directly in front of The Surgery.

A pleasant surprise

Judging from the sign outside, I expected a small place where you can quickly eat a pizza or take one home. But after entering, I immediately knew that a short visit wouldn’t cut it. At all.

Although Kampala has a lot of restaurants which warmly welcome the little people, not a lot of them have a (safe) play area. Olives knows how it’s done. The wooden playhouse with climbing wall and slide will keep those tiny people busy for a while. They even have small blue and white picnic tables with matching sun screens where the kids can have dinner. Meanwhile the really small ones can enjoy themselves in the confined area opposite the playhouse where soft matts and dito toys offer entertainment. In both cases you can keep an eye on them while having dinner in one of the lounge area’s.

Cozy nooks

If you feel like having a nice and quiet meal, it’s probably best to sit downstairs where most of the noise - a pleasent one - comes from the waterfall. It doesn’t really matter which spot you choose though, every nook has it’s own charm with all the different kinds of lightning, the colorful tiles on the floor and exotic plants hanging from the ceiling. The kind owners really took an effort in decorating the restaurant with all its special touches, which is one of the reasons I love to frequent Olives. With or without kids, you’ll definitely have a good time.

Pizza & pad thai

The menu mainly fuses the Italian and Asian (Thai/Indian) kitchen, although the usual suspects like fish and chips and hamburgers are also there. For a big eater like myself, I consider the portions a bit modest. I’ve tried a bit of everything; lasagna (26K), pizza (noteworthy: there are 32 different pizza's ranging from 18K to 30K, baked in a wood oven!) ravioli (26K), pad thai chicken (25K), palak paneer (25K) and my favourite, the falafel stuffed pita's (24K). The decent food together with the ambiance and friendliness of the place, keeps making me coming back for more.
