In The Netherlands this would be a perfect go-to place in the late evening (or should I say early morning?) after too many drinks and too big an appetite.
The Shawarma Charm
But also on perfectly normal hours - with or without a hangover - a pita shoarma tastes just as good. In Meza, right in front of the main entrance of Acacia Mall, Libanese street food is key. And that means chicken or beef shawarma, falafel, beef kofta and humus. On the terrace of the restaurant beef and chicken are grilled on a spit. I can warmly recommend the chicken shawarma (12K); shavings are cut off the block and get wrapped in a pita flatbread with lettuce, tomato, a tahin sauce, gurkins and –which doesn’t sound very Libanese to me – chips.
Since there’s nothing between you and the sidewalk, you’re sitting duck for street vendors. In the fifteen minutes I gobbled down some falafel (not as good as the chicken shawarma by the way), three different street vendors were offering me sunglasses, skirts and table-cloths. Since the restaurant is nothing flashy, you just want to eat that thing and go anyway. I guess that’s all part of the shawarma charm.
