After numerous visits to Kisementi, I suddenly became aware of this place on the corner of the square, swallowed by Kampala’s green: Endiro Coffee!
Go green
No, it’s no quiet oasis with cars en boda boda’s going up and down the street, but the fact that you can enjoy a good cup of coffee in your own little green bubble sounds very appealing. At least to me!
You can choose to drink your coffe outside on one of the two canvas topped terraces or sip ’n see inside. On the walls are beautiful portraits of children living in the orphanage that the owner of Endiro has founded.
There’s a rabbit in my coffee
What about the menu? Besides the usual suspects they serve milkshakes (the Nutella & Pretzel shake sounds interesting), freshly squeezed juices (enough cleansing, detox, antioxidants and immune boosting going on there), iced drinks and smoothies. The Mbale Frappe, one of Endiro's signature drinks, is my absolute favorite: a single espresso blended with milk, bananas, vanilla ice cream and whipped cream if you' re up for it. The barrista can simply do amazing things with hot milk: where else will you find a rabbit or a disturbed looking woman in your froth staring back at you? There’s also enough to nibble. Start the day with a breakfast taco (8K) or The mzungu (20K) for example: two golden waffles, a pair of eggs, bacon or sausage, hash browns and a cup of Ugandan coffee or tea. I bet The mudugavu wouldn't mind starting the day like that either.
One more thing though; while I’m enjoying my coffee, I’ve noticed that I’m not the only muzungu crouched behind a laptop. Actually, practically every customer is typing, so if you’re not into that, I do advice you to just keep on walking.
Nice-to-know: Endiro is a (colourful) basket given on special occassions. They sell them at the Banana Boat just next door.
